TheFeeLion Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 I got home from work today to discover my husband had ahd an accident with my new Fairy Lights deck. He'd knocked over some water I'd had set up for doing watercolour painting and had spilt all over some of my deck 😭 then instead of cleaning up all the water he just moved all the wet cards into a pile to the side (I do t even know if he dried them off) and put a cloth over the puddle 🙄 I've put all the affected cards I to the hot water cupboard to dry off properly but they pretty buckled! Does anyone have any advice to help save them? Seems like a silly question but can you iron them flat? Any advice would help!
Kath Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 Oh no! I'm sorry, I don't have any advice, but I'm sending my condolences. I'm sure you will get recommendations for a good divorce lawyer- oops, I mean good advice for possibly straightening your cards out.
Riimukissa Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 I am so sorry to hear that! 😱 I know I’d be furious with my husband... My suggestion would be to put something flat and heavy on them, maybe a book or something, while the cards are still damp. I’d dry each of them separately. And I wouldn’t take the risk to iron them flat – you might burn them.
Mab Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 So sorry to hear about this. I am a terrible phone dropper, in bath, loo and pond, and have used the rice drying out method on numerous occasions. It might work, using individual cards, if they could be laid flat, surrounded by rice grains? (Daft idea #41)
vulprix Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 I think the above suggestions are good, and it depends on how soft and floppy the cards got how they’re going to recover, I think. I have a couple water-damaged decks—a Rider Waite, and an Ancient Italian deck. I still actively use both. Both decks are warped, but that happens to many decks, especially over time. I recommend trimming the borders if the water pools around the edges, which I imagine it might. I didn’t do so for the Ancient Italian but honestly it would probably look cool if I did 😁 I wish you luck!!

And you were at work? That means when you're not home, he's wifey. He should do housework in heels like June Cleaver until he gets the point. 14 hours ago, TheFeeLion said: I've put all the affected cards I to the hot water cupboard to dry off properly but they pretty buckled! Does anyone have any advice to help save them? Seems like a silly question but can you iron them flat? Any advice would help! Knock on wood, I've never had a deck get spilled on. But I've had a few get damaged from high humidity and condensation, and that's water damage. They bubbled and stuck together, I couldn't get them apart without tearing them. (They had apparently long since dried.) Now I keep desiccant in my card storage drawer! It's good that you found them before they stuck. Stacking them was the worst thing he could have done! But since you've managed to dry them already (what is a hot water cupboard, BTW?), yes, you can iron them, but carefully. Set your iron to polyester, since that's a plastic fiber (that's why it doesn't breathe), If you do that, they shouldn't scorch and the coating shouldn't melt. You might want to put a layer of fabric on top while you're doing this, just to be safe. If that works, great! If not, stick them in fat books while they're still warm and leave them a few weeks. Keep us posted!

I have an image in my head of him wobbling around in a pair of stilettos 😂 7 minutes ago, katrinka said: what is a hot water cupboard, BTW? It's the closet that the hot water cylinder lives in, it's always warm in there 😊 The good thing is none of them stuck together so I didn't have to worry about trying to peel them apart. I took the damaged cards out of the cupboard earlier (they weren't looking too bad) and have put them under a couple of conveniently large and heavy books. I think I'll give the iron a go later tonight and put them back under while they're still warm. That seems like the best idea at this point...
TheFeeLion Posted September 28, 2020 Author Posted September 28, 2020 Update: I left them sandwiched under some heavy books for a few days. There's a slight wave to a few of them still but nothing I can't handle. I could have left them under for a while longer to flatten then a little more but I got impatient to take them out! I'm just happy they're somewhat flat again 😁
Kath Posted September 29, 2020 Posted September 29, 2020 That's great news! Hopefully you never have to do this again 🙂
Gardener Posted September 29, 2020 Posted September 29, 2020 I'm so glad you have your deck back! Some of my decks have a bit of a wave - I think it just adds character.
