EmpyreanKnight Posted February 21, 2018 Posted February 21, 2018 Which among the decks inspired by the Thoth do you personally like? How do they read and how often do you work with them? Do they have companion books, and would you recommend them?
EmpyreanKnight Posted February 21, 2018 Author Posted February 21, 2018 I've heard lots of good things about the Tabula Mundi Colores Arcus, the Rosetta, and the Asherah, and I do plan on including them in my collection. :) I adore the Kabbalistic Visions Tarot, but tho they have some similarities they still have lots of differences (the Star is still Tzaddi, for example). It may be inspired by the Thoth, but it's hardly a clone.
EmpyreanKnight Posted February 21, 2018 Author Posted February 21, 2018 Btw HERE is a list of Thoth-Inspired Tarot decks. It's quite incomplete tho. I've heard that the following decks (which were not included in that list) can also be considered as such: Akron Asherah Ceremonial Magick Deva Gareth Knight Gill Native American Nicoletta Ceccoli Quest Sephiroth Spirit Sun and Moon Vampyres Wheel of Change Zillich (upcoming)
Magickjack Posted February 22, 2018 Posted February 22, 2018 The Tabula Mundi is a beautiful deck but I want to talk about the Rosetta Tarot. I did not get this deck a couple years ago because why did I need a Thoth clone? Well, when you can't have things anymore is when you want them, right? The 2nd printing came out and she changed the border from black to Papyrus border because the black was chipping as black borders do. Oh, I was so let down because the black border would have looked so nice. I decided I had to have this deck because of the beautiful backs. So, I had to settle for the Papyrus border. WELL, how strange things turn out! This 2nd edition is one of the most awesome decks I have ever enjoyed! All titles are done in Hieroglphyics. Same beautiful backs! This has become one of my favorite decks to work with of all time.
Flaxen Posted February 22, 2018 Posted February 22, 2018 I have the Liber T, Rosetta, Vision Quest and Haindl from the AT list. They all work well as reading decks although I would say that the Liber T and Rosetta are the more obviously Thoth inspired. Vision Quest is easiest to read with straight out the box. I like them all though and have the Tabula Mundi on my wish list - it will work out quite pricey for me once shipping and customs is added on. Contenting myself with the app for the time being. Alta Posted February 22, 2018 Posted February 22, 2018 The Magickal is clearly Thoth based and the book reinforces that. I like this deck and have used it many times. Deep man, deep. I use the Tabula Mundi Colores Arcus exclusively at this time though knowing me that will change, and there is no doubt that is Thoth based. Both of those decks work well for me. I have not connected as well with the Rosetta, but then I have the black edged version, maybe the papyrus edges would make it more attractive. Haindl never worked for me and I did try for a while. Kept thinking it should but does not resonate. I have several of the other decks but don’t use them, or not often. Still love the Thoth though.
sandrang123 Posted February 22, 2018 Posted February 22, 2018 I have Gill somewhere, from way back when it came out. I used to love reading from it. Very pretty deck. Hm. I wonder where that is in my house now?! (From the sound of that, you'd think I'm a pack rat, but really I just have so many decks and we've moved so much, some end up in boxes/stored, in random drawers or cubbies, etc.) I just came across William Blake tarot and was like, "Totally forgot I had you!" Thanks for the reminder of Gill! :) Btw HERE is a list of Thoth-Inspired Tarot decks. It's quite incomplete tho. Guest Posted February 23, 2018 Posted February 23, 2018 The Via Tarot is another one, OOP. I find it a bit weird, lol. But then I bought it early in my tarot days before I knew there were different systems and my first confused impression has stuck. http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/via/
EmpyreanKnight Posted March 2, 2018 Author Posted March 2, 2018 It seems that Lo Scarabeo is planning a Trilogy of Thelema series, featuring art by Renata Lechner. The first two, the Thelema Tarot and the recently-released Arcanum Tarot, are available now. The third, the Millenium Thoth Tarot, seems set to be LoS's originally illustrated version of the Thoth. It is due to be out either next year or in 2020 at the latest. I'm so excited about this!
EmpyreanKnight Posted March 19, 2018 Author Posted March 19, 2018 Finally, the art in some of the cards of the Millenium Thoth Tarot can be seen HERE. You might want to take a look at it, Jewel[/member].

Rose Lalonde Posted March 22, 2018 Posted March 22, 2018 My favorite is Tabula Mundi, for the way it's organized and how it clarifies so many things I didn't understand about the Thoth until I got TM. TM is very true to Thoth naming and ordering, but the art is all original. (I honestly prefer it to the Thoth; I used to sort of whisper that, like it's sacrilege, but I don't anymore. I think TM is a work of genius in its own right.) I also love the Asherah. Unlike TM, it varies from the Thoth in places. Judgment instead of Aeon for one. A female Hermit. Artist was inspired by Dione Fortune. Those 2 are in my top 3 reading decks. The ones I read with 98% of the time. (Btw, Tarot of the Sephiroth is heavily Golden Dawn deck inspired, but not so much Thoth. It uses Golden Dawn order and names for Strength, Justice, Judgment. Courts are Princess, Prince, Queen, and King. Emphasis is on GD card placement on the Tree of Life.)
MollyCat Posted March 22, 2018 Posted March 22, 2018 I'm not a Thoth oriented person, though I have a copy of that deck. I have the Sephiroth too but it's packed away. In my early tarot days, liked it very much. Have the Rosetta and Tabula Mundi on apps and much prefer the latter. I have Liber T on app as well but didn't take to it.

I've heard that it's now available in a large size. I'd definitely be getting the deck along with the Tabula Mundi Colores Arcus. :) Also, thanks for clarifying the bit about the Tarot of the Sephiroth.
EmpyreanKnight Posted March 29, 2018 Author Posted March 29, 2018 This is a very helpful page: Visual Comparison of Golden Dawn and Thelemic Tarot Decks
Bookworm Posted March 29, 2018 Posted March 29, 2018 The Cosmic Tribe! ;D Wow, I hadn't seen that one before! I have the Rosetta Papyrus, and I like it a lot. The app is great and includes the very helpful Book of Seshet. I know that I will have to do some extended work with the Thoth system to really get it. I really, really want the Tabula Mundi and the Asherah, but right now I have too many other Tarot systems going on. I just hope those two will still in print when I'm ready to buy.
Rose Lalonde Posted May 31, 2018 Posted May 31, 2018 Just adding info now that the watercolor Zillich is out. It has Thoth keywords on minors (only difference is Bliss instead of Happiness). It has Lust (at VIII), Adjustment (at XI) and XXI Universe. XIV is Temperance, and -- oddly -- XX is called Justice (though the image reminds me of Judgement with the horn). Courts are Thoth titles. No astrological symbols on cards. It does have Hebrew letters (has Emperor and Star's Golden Dawn letters, rather than Thoth switch.)
Asher Posted November 28, 2018 Posted November 28, 2018 In addition to my (several) copies of the Thoth deck, I am partial to the Rosetta (want to get the Tabula Mundi, tho I do have the app on my iPad) and the beautiful Urban Tarot by artist Robin Scott. Of the Urban, the artist says "The deck is based in part on the Thoth Tarot created by Aleister Crowley, with an emphasis on elemental symbolism. My goal has been to create a tarot set that describes the modern world of a major city through the lens of the mystical. {It} is a love letter to my city, my island and my first muse, New York." It can be seen on RobinScottArt.com. A big favorite of mine currently, as I usually pull a card a day on the app (if I can't get to my deck).
