Non-Traditional Indie Deck

Hi everyone! I'm super bad at forums (lurked at Aeclectic for years but never posted), but I just wanted to share my tarot deck work-in-progress, The Dreamer's Tarot.

It's loosely inspired by dream logic, and many of the cards stray quite a bit from traditional Rider-Waite symbolism, while still aiming to embody the cards well enough to stay identifiable.

So far, all 22 majors are completed, and I'm previewing them on my Instagram this week. Next week I'll be starting a Kickstarter project to run through October and (hopefully!) get the Dreamer's Arcana printed professionally, with any profits going towards working on the minor suits (with an eventual complete 78-card deck as the ultimate goal).

I know non-traditional decks aren't everyone's cup of tea, but I'm hoping my deck strikes a chord with some people. I'm always happy to discuss my reasoning for how I've designed the cards, and would love to hear any opinions people have.

Some samples of the art (The Fool, The Tower and the Moon)

All artwork is by Apolline Etienne, I'm just the designer steering her towards images that will (I hope) make a meaningful Tarot deck [emoji846]

Why jellyfish?

Why jellyfish?

Because they glow?

Welcome to the forum

Partially because they glow, but mostly because (being translucent, and due to the way they move) they obscure. My design for the card is actually less about the jellyfish (though of course they are the first things you notice!) and more about what is happening in the scene that are obscured or overshadowed (for example, there is a shark to the lower right and a treasure chest to the lower left of the card art).

I was partly inspired by the idea that the 'truth' that the Moon is encouraging you to seek is not to be found in the flashy or the obvious, but something you have to work to find (with some parallels to the Hermit - which in my deck centers on the idea that you can't see the stars if you're blinded by city lights).

And, finally... those are moon jellies (a specific species of jellyfish), which is one of those details that isn't really 'symbolism' but is still meaningful in a way I personally enjoy :)

They were the first thing I notice.

There are just so many of them and the contrast in colors is beautiful.

And of course because I always thought they were pretty.

I missed the shark  :o

Thank you for explaining.  Beautiful deck!

Thank you so much! My very first deck was the original Mythic Tarot, so I've always had a soft spot for nontraditional decks :)

I was planning on posting here with the link once the campaign is live, yes :)

It's going up in less than 12 hours, so I'll be back soon XD

And here's a second collage of some of the pieces that have been most popular on instagram. Top is Renascence (Death), bottom left is Ouroboros (The World), and bottom right is Bravery (Strength)3afe15c3735a4a03b99215a97be07b61.jpg

love the artwork

just I feel somehow the fool should be doing .. doesn't necessary have to be the traditional leap of faith off the cliff. in your dream world he could be stepping into a fire,, going on a spaceship..

love the white cat though.

She is crossing boundaries - from dark into light and from the forest into a clearing. I understand people might prefer the traditional 'about to fall into trouble' fool, but I've never really identified with it. If you haven't read my first Kickstarter update, you might find it interesting. I explain my design and intent of the Dreamer in a bit more detail :)

It just isnt apparent she is crossing boundaries perhaps if the color blue was pulled back a bit or just put around her.  And the other color behind some blue so the blue becomes he4 aura.

For me doesnt have to be traditional like i said.

I've been updating the Kickstarter every day, each day highlighting a new card. On the weekends I do a summary post linking all the updates, plus any addon reveals (I've got both stickers and magnets available now).

Here's a link to the weekend update for anyone curious about my design choices: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/808097239/the-dreamers-arcana-22-card-majors-only-tarot-deck/posts/2308804

No need to pledge to see updates, they're free to everyone. But the project is only fifteen $35 pledges away from being fully funded, so if you'd like to see this deck get printed, please consider pledging [emoji4]

Hi again everyone! There's only 21 hours left in the Dreamer's Arcana Kickstarter! We've unlocked every stretchgoal. This included adding 14 alternate art cards, which explore different facets of the major arcana. For example, I've attached the two versions of the Chariot (Discipline and Perseverance) and the two versions of Temperance (Synergy and Precision).

Any extra funding we get will go into additional improvements to the deck (a hardcover book? An extra 8 cards to make a double arcana? A tarot cloth? It'll all depend where the funding ends up!)

I've also got all but one of the card updates up, including the full write ups for the Chariot and Temperance alternates. If you're intrigued at all, this is your last chance to check out the project!
